HUMANE CHARITY SPOTLIGHT

Organization for Autism Research

According to a recent report by the Centers for Disease Control, one in 88 children in the United States has autism, a developmental disorder that affects social and communication skills. This report was released just in time for April, Autism Awareness Month. Although there is no cure for autism, the Organization for Autism Research (OAR) is improving the quality of life for those with autism and their families by supporting humane, innovative autism research.

OAR is dedicated to funding applied research that focuses on specific issues affecting people with autism, including education, communication, self-sufficiency, social skills, employment, and behavior. The organization relies on input from parents, teachers, and health care professionals to determine the most high-priority research areas.

One study currently supported by OAR is an analysis of the outcome of different behavioral interventions on development in autistic children. Researchers at the New England Center for Children conducted an assessment of autistic children and their peers ages one to five, focusing on complexity of play, language, and imitation. They hope that data from this assessment will be used to increase funding for early intervention services nationwide.

OAR disseminates results of its research through conferences, resource guides, e-newsletters, and on its web site. These valuable resources help teachers, parents, and others learn how to best interact with autistic children and set them on a path to success. OAR also promotes achievement by awarding scholarships to autistic students pursuing college education or vocational studies.

Unlike animal experiments, which are irrelevant to human health, research funded by OAR has a direct, positive impact on people with autism. To learn more about OAR during Autism Awareness Month, please visit www.ResearchAutism.org.
